Ex-CISI planning head Jacqueline Lockie becomes CFP coach
Lockie Consultants, the business launched in March by former CISI financial planning head Jacqueline Lockie, has had a busy summer as it helped more than 30 professionals with their CISI L7 financial plan submissions.
The fledgling business offers one-to-one case study assessment training, coaching, mentoring, financial planning training, workshops and help with marketing content to financial services professionals.
Lockie said: “Our scheme is designed based on international research and broken down into 12 categories and set with timescales. It is designed to give a new entrant, whether a graduate or not, a clear pathway to become a CFP.”
Using the tagline ‘Your Financial Planning Maestro’, Lockie is trying to build an online presence with a YouTube channel, regular email newsletters and is also set to launch a podcast next month.
She said the podcast would talk “all things certified financial planner” with input from special guests who will share their insights for those looking to become certified.
Lockie’s focus, she said, is to both help people gain their professional qualifications and help small and medium-sized advice firms to grow.
“Small and medium-sized financial planning business owners are looking for an exit in the next five to 10 years and we can help them get their staff in a position to buy them out rather than going to a large consolidator.
“These businesses are really at the front line of giving great service to their clients. Owners are looking at a 10-year exit but how do they structure that?”
Lockie said she designed a comprehensive training scheme for advice firm staff covering all elements of business processes, management and soft skills as well as passing relevant exams.
“Passing exams – we can all do that. But it is about having the right attitude, ambition and drive.
“Jackie recently supported me in preparation of the CFP Case Study Submission which is by far the most complex, detailed and consuming piece of study I have ever done. Our sessions helped me zone out, calm down, organise my thoughts and push through.”

Former CISI Planning head launches 2 CFP prep courses
Two new courses have been launched to support Financial Planners through their CISI level 7 qualification to gain their Certified Financial Planner certification.
The two fully online courses from Lockie Consultants are designed to provide comprehensive training materials and resources for those embarking on CISI level 7 case study financial plan assessment, the route to becoming a Certified Financial Planning professional.
Lockie Consultants was founded by former CISI head of Financial Planning Jacqueline Lockie.
She spent over four years at the CISI and played a key role in the integration of the Institute of Financial Planning (IFP) membership following the CISI/IFP merger in November 2015 and supported the institute while it ‘re-engineered’ the new Certified Financial Planner pathway, the first to offer a Level 7 designation.
The courses include pre-plan preparation, training for constructing the financial plan (including spreadsheet training), and guidance both before and during the student’s financial plan creation. The courses include videos, reading and links to additional resources.
Students will have two year’s access to the course materials and will be able to refer back to them at any time.
Previously there was only one course running with the Financial Planning Training Academy which can accommodate only 15 trainees per course.
Ms Lockie said the new courses could be a “game changer” for those looking to get their certification as one of the two online courses does not restrict how many students can take part, enabling more people to train for the Financial Planning qualification.
The numbers of students purchasing the enhanced course is limited as they will also get individual 1-2-1 sessions with Ms Lockie.
Ms Lockie said: “Our aim is to help students maximise their chances of passing, giving them the knowledge and support along the way. Our course materials are comprehensive and affordable. The courses can also cope with demand from all those interested in undertaking the financial plan element of this global certification. We have also built community support into all the courses as well as 1:2:1 coaching option in one.
“This could be a game-changer for growing the numbers Certified Financial Planner professionals in the UK.”
The new courses will launch in two stages; pre-preparation on 4 November (when the Level 6 exam results are released), then financial plan creation will be released on 25 November (the day the CISI issues the case studies to all those eligible).
“Having missed out on a lot of marks on my first CFP case study submission and a brief time of reflection and thinking “What am I going to do to make up the marks?” I approached Jackie, as I knew she was setting up a mentoring service. I’m glad I did. We went through each of the main sections and set out a plan of what I needed to do and how to approach it in bite-size chunks. Having Jackie coach me has made me feel more confident about my approach and made me realise where I’ve made errors and how to spot them. Hopefully good news awaits. Anyone thinking of embarking on the CFP route or who is struggling after the first submission should definitely ask Jackie to mentor them.”
